Matt Ashford runs a family vineyard in Woodchurch alongside his wife, Karen, and sister, Emma. Together, they produce some of the finest still wines in Kent. Founded in 2016 behind the Ashford family home, Wayfarer House on the historic Pilgrims’ Way, the family embarked on a journey into winemaking and viticulture. Having studied at Plumpton College, Matt and his father Jeff ambitiously set out to create the finest still wines ever produced in Kent, using only specialised ‘still clone’ vines planted on their original two-acre site.
After their initial success, the family expanded into a new location in Woodchurch, planting an additional 12,000 vines in 2020 to increase production. Their success continued when in 2024, they were incredibly proud to be awarded Best Wine in Kent, an honour that saw them recognised ahead of some of the biggest and most established names in the UK wine industry. This achievement reflects not only the quality of their wines but also the dedication, hard work and vision behind the vineyard.
Wayfarer Wines warmly invites visitors to explore the Woodchurch vineyard through tours and tastings, immersing themselves in the beauty of breathtaking views, and peaceful surroundings. For those closer to the coast, the vineyard has also brought its ‘cellar door’ to the vibrant Folkestone Harbour Arm, where guests can sample wines before purchasing.
